Since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing more than 1,000 Israelis and capturing more than 200 hostages, Israel’s response has been swift and brutal. Most of Gaza’s infrastructure has been destroyed, and international pressure is mounting on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end the war, and to avoid a new war with Iran. In this moment, I wanted to talk to one of Netanyahu’s most vocal critics inside Israel: Yair Lapid. He briefly became prime minister of Israel in 2022 — at the time, The Atlantic deemed him “the man who could end the Netanyahu era” — and he remains a member of the Knesset. After Oct. 7, he refused to join Netanyahu’s war cabinet.

Scrolling through, I often wonder how Rossellini is so comfortable in her own skin at an age when many women struggle in theirs. Her father, the director Roberto Rossellini, was a giant of Italian cinema. In the film “La Chimera,” directed by the Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher and opening in theaters on March 29, Rossellini plays a Tuscan matriarch who’s aging with a lot less equanimity than Isabella herself. Well, you know, I say you need two ingredients to open a farm: optimism and ignorance. And ignorance is how hard it is — how hard it is workwise, but also to make it financially viable.

It’s no exaggeration to say that the writer Nora Roberts has shaped how generations of people, especially women, think about relationships and sex — not to mention, what makes a great story. Before Roberts, the romance genre was dominated by tepid and virginal women who were overpowered by brooding men. As one romance critic told me, “Nora Roberts is the sun” around which the entire genre orbits. I was a teenager when I started sneaking into my older sister’s room to steal her Nora Roberts books. Love in a Nora Roberts book wasn’t about conquest and submission, as it was in most romance novels at the time, but rather about equality and partnership.

The initial report, which included a large headline across The Times’s website, led with claims by Hamas government officials that the explosion was caused by an Israeli airstrike. I believe that there are ways of getting at brown students other than lowering qualifications. And I think, frankly, the culture of higher education is such that we don’t have to worry whether that’ll happen. And I don’t think that we’re necessarily going to see what we would have any reason to call an emergency in race relations and opportunity. If that’s what we were going to see, I would not be for it. And I think that we can afford to actually try to have that happen at this point.
